Founder

With their future hanging in the balance, the sunken eyes, the depressed moods and hopelessness evident on the faces of needy, orphan and poor children, one young man's heart was touched and he resolved to do whatever he could to cheer up those children. With a bunch of sugarcanes planted at the backyard of his rented plot he started by sharing them with the children who automatically realized their worth and started to shed off their gloomy moods and become happy this in turn led to the coinage of the word HAPPY NAIROBI KIDS.

Through tenacity and dedication, the young man established the center to be able to take care and educated the vulnerable children in Nairobi, having himself been brought up in the same situation of poverty and misery. To him having three meals a day was a dream. Through great struggle and assistance from teachers, he completed his primary education and passed .He made friendship with teachers so that in return they supported him and saw him complete his primary education.

After completing his primary school and passing he had no hope of going ahead with his secondary education as his family could not manage to raise the school fees, it was very sad for him to look at his fellow friends join high school, but he did not lose hope he started by doing manual jobs to get food to support his family and sister who was by then in primary school, one year later he met with a well-wisher who after listening to his story offered to support him trough high school but as fate could have it his happiness was cut short the following year when he realized that his good friend had left the country after his business closed.

He had to stop school and look for casual job and save little by little after saving for five months he went to a newly established private high school and because they had less students they agreed to admit him and he joined his second year in school, in his first team in the third year the owners of the school disagreed and the school was indefinitely closed leaving Francis with no hope of ever completing school.

luckily one of he former school teacher opened a small school and after a presenting his case he was admitted and in return to be paying in installments which his mother could afford after having started a hawking business, in the third form I acquired a bursary from the government of Kenya which enabled him to complete secondary education, after which he joined a government sponsored training institution where he specialized in counseling and guidance. After completing training he attended several seminars to sharpen his skills in counseling and guidance. The experience so acquired has helped counsel many children countrywide.

Centre's Population

January 2nd 2006 saw the doors of the first Happy Nairobi Kids facilities open to six orphans, since then the number has grown to over ninety (90). This is in response to the increasing number of HIV/Aids orphan and street children, it is estimated that there are 120,000 children or more living in the streets and slums of Nairobi 85% of whom are sexually active and practice unplanned sporadic and unprotected sex.

This has accelerated the speed of HIV/Aids and led to second generation street families, street children have been marginalized by society and this have led to their involvement in petty theft, begging, prostitution and exhibiting violence to others and themselves. Most of the children at Happy Nairobi Kids come from very difficult circumstance, many come from the street where they have been foraging for food in trash bins and sleeping under buses, some are complete orphans having lost both parents to HIV/Aids.
